Myth Busters: 5 Things About Braces That Simply Aren’t True
November 21, 2024
Over the years, you may have heard things about braces – whether on social media or from TV shows. But is it true? It’s important to find out, especially regarding something as important as your oral health. Below, you will find the truth behind five popular myths about braces.
Myth #1: You Can’t Play Instruments with Braces
Not only can you play the guitar, drums, and piano with braces, but you can play wind instruments as well. The key is covering any sharp edges of your brackets and wires with dental wax, especially toward the beginning of your treatment. It’s also important to be patient with yourself and put in a few extra hours of practice. Before you know it, you won’t even notice your braces!
Myth #2: Braces Will Always Hurt
Soreness and discomfort are very normal when you first get braces (and after the first few adjustment appointments). Don’t worry though – it won’t last forever. Plus, you can take OTC pain medication as directed to keep you comfortable in the meantime. Eating soft foods, sipping on cool water, and using a cold compress will also help!
Myth #3: Only Children and Teens Can Get Braces
Although metal braces are quite popular among children and teens, they are also suitable for patients in their 20s and beyond. In fact, adults often do very well because they are investing their own money, and they have a deeper understanding of the importance of following the treatment guidelines. In other words, you shouldn’t let your age stop you from scheduling an appointment!
Myth #4: If You Kiss Someone, Your Braces Will Get Locked
Although you’ve probably seen this gag in countless TV shows and movies, your braces won’t get locked with someone else’s when you kiss. That said, we do recommend going slow and being gentle to avoid accidentally knocking the brackets or wires together. It’s also important to clean your teeth and your braces thoroughly beforehand!
Myth #5: You Don’t Have to Wear Your Retainer
Did you know that upwards of 50% of patients experience orthodontic relapse, which is when the teeth drift back into their previously misaligned positions? That’s why you need to wear your retainer as directed! This small orthodontic appliance plays a big role in protecting the time and money you invested into the teeth-straightening process.
