Meet Dr. Damian D. Blum, D.M.D., P.A.

Dr. Damian D. Blum’s reputation for performing the highest quality fine dentistry is only rivaled by his kindness and penchant to turn a smile. He brings compassion and excellence to the art of dentistry, excelling in cosmetic dentistry and smile design. When asked what he likes most about his work, he says he loves it when he’s made a true difference in someone’s life — one of the most amazing feelings in the world. From developing life saving treatment plans for patients with obstructive sleep apnea who are CPAP intolerant, to that moment after treatment when a patient looks in the mirror and smiles — these are the reasons Dr. Blum loves coming to work every day!

Education and Continuing Education

Dr. Blum has trained and studied under many of the top clinicians in the world for the past 30+ years. He began his journey toward becoming a dentist as a volunteer at the Sinai Hospital Dental Clinic, graduating from UMBC with a BA in Biology and Psychology. He studied at Boston University’s School of Dental Medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree in 1983. In the same year he opened the doors of his first private practice in Baltimore and later opened the doors of a new practice in 1987 in Ellicott City. Passionate about education and sharing knowledge, Dr. Blum believes that if someone has the opportunity to learn something, they should pay it forward. Dr. Blum attends trainings and conferences year round, sometimes as a student and other times as the instructor. He is also a past volunteer Clinical Instructor at the University of Maryland Dental School.

In recent years, Dr. Blum has been lecturing and training other dentists around the country in improving patients’ airway, in sleep disordered breathing and in alternative therapy for those who cannot wear a C-PAP machine. He also speaks and trains other dentists in Therapeutic and Cosmetic uses of Botox to help with migraines, pain and other orofacial pain.

Awards and Recognition

Voted one of America’s ‘Top Dentists’ by Independent Consumers’ Research Group, Dr. Blum has also received the “Talk of the Town” Award several years running for excellent reputation in patient/customer service. Dr. Blum is an Accredited Member and on the Faculty of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics; an Elected Fellow of the International Academy for Dental Facial Esthetics; a 2010 Founding Member of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health; member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology; active member of the American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry; member of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines; 1986 Charter Member of the American Academy for Functional Orthodontics; member of the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation; an active Member of the American Dental Association; active Member of the Maryland State Dental Association; member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine; member of the Maryland Sleep Society; member of the Leading Physicians of the World; and member of the International Association of Dentists. For more than 30 years, Dr. Blum‘s patients have benefited from his dedication to improving their oral and systemic health. He has maintained a Mercury-Free and Mercury-Safe dental practice after finding, through existing research, that mercury was a neurotoxin not safe to place in patient mouths. He also discovered and understood the ever-present relationship between dental problems, periodontal problems, orofacial pain, TMD, headaches, systemic inflammatory diseases and problems with the patient’s airway and breathing. Once he started researching and digging deeper into the connection between systemic health, airway blockages and sleep disordered breathing, there was no turning back. It became a soul purpose for him to help his patients, as well as to teach other dentists and allied health professionals, about airway problems and sleep related breathing disorders. Building health is not about competition – it’s about community. Through his clinical practice, lectures and workshops, Dr. Blum has made it his quest to spread the word about treatment of sleep related breathing disorders.

Giving back to the community

Dr. Blum always makes the space and time to volunteer and give to people and organizations in need. One of the best parts of a community is the act of building it. Dr. Blum participates in the Give Back a Smile Program by donating restorative and cosmetic dentistry services to survivors of domestic violence. In addition, Dr. Blum has been donating dental services through the Maryland Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped for many years, taking on pro bono patients who are experiencing poverty, have slipped through the cracks of Medicaid/Medicare programs, and have disabilities that render them unable to care for themselves without help. When not doing dentistry, Dr. Blum can often be found doing cooking experiments, gardening, geeking out to good music, and getting involved in just causes. His two children, Ashley and Rye, are his pride and joy.
